I wish I could write a more positive review of the Champaign Garden Inn. On the one hand, the property is beautiful both on the inside and outside. Much care went into the interior decor. The furniture, artwork, and other adornments are unique and tastefully selected. Consideration went into small details such as having ice scrappers and umbrellas available in the entryway. On the other hand, a sense of hospitality was lacking. Over a three night stay, I had no direct contact with the owner or anyone else affiliated with the Inn. Both check-in and check-out were contactless and breakfast was entirely self service of frozen or store bought items (English muffins, dry cereal, oatmeal packets, yogurt, bananas, etc.). As well, the property has a number of posted signs that had a mildly off-putting tone: an "UNDER RECORDED VIDEO SURVEILLANCE" in the kitchen, "WIPE YOUR FEET" with large yellow caution symbols, an impersonal letter upon arriving labeled "READ DIRECTIONS FIRST", and warning that I would be charged $25 if I remove/steal the flashlight from my $300+ a night room (prices were higher for UIUC father's weekend). Overall, it was different from all my other bed and breakfast experiences, which have been warm and welcoming.
