We love the Cherry Tree Inn and we’ve returned every year for 15+ years now. However, we noticed changes in the last couple of years with new ownership. They now charge a destination resort fee of $15/day. Although we love the hotel and it is very nice, it definitely is not a resort; it is a very nice motel/hotel, but not a resort. I can understand if the Grand Traverse Resort charges that fee, but not this hotel. A resort has activities such as a spa, golf, etc. on site. This is not a resort. Particularly because the website describes the amenities covered by this fee, and we used to have the same exact amenities without the fee before (free parking, pool, wi-fi, breakfast buffet, coffee, shuttle, private beach). All these listed amenities used to be free just a couple of years ago, obviously this is just an excuse to charge more. Also, we feel the quality has decreased. There used to be bacon a few days a week in the past for breakfast, now they don’t offer it anymore (when asked, it is because of its price) Much cheaper hotels across the street offer bacon everyday! (We did want to recognize Laura, the breakfast chef, whose hospitality and customer service and cooking skills are wonderful. She makes every morning better just with her presence). With charging a destination fee, can't you at least offer bacon a couple days a week in your hot breakfast? We are paying more for less now and we are disappointed. You also stopped the rewards program where you’d get a $50 gift card for every 10 nights stay. With the higher price, we are unfortunately not sure if we will be able to keep vacationing at what it used to be our favorite Traverse City hotel.
